AI-generated child sexual abuse images could flood the ...
The realism of AI-generated child sexual abuse images has increased significantly in recent years, according to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). Their 2024 annual report highlights a 380% rise in illegal AI-generated imagery compared to 2023, with 245 reports equating to 7,644 images and videos. The majority of these images fall under "category A," which includes the most extreme forms of child sexual abuse, such as penetrative sexual activity or sadism.
Advances in AI technology have made these images and videos increasingly indistinguishable from real content, even for trained analysts. This alarming trend is not confined to the dark web but is also appearing on the open internet, making it more accessible and harder to detect.
In response, the UK government has introduced new laws making it illegal to possess, create, or distribute AI tools designed to generate child sexual abuse material. Additionally, the IWF has launched a free safety tool called Image Intercept, which helps smaller websites detect and block criminal imagery, aiding compliance with the Online Safety Act.
This rise in AI-generated abuse underscores the evolving threats to children online, necessitating innovative solutions and stricter regulations to combat this growing issue.
