The Australian Radio Network (ARN) has faced significant backlash for its use of an AI-generated radio host named 'Thy' on Sydney's CADA station. The AI host, modelled on an employee from the network’s finance department, was created in collaboration with voice cloning company ElevenLabs. Thy has been broadcasting four-hour segments on digital radio for approximately six months without any disclosure that she is artificial.
This lack of transparency has sparked criticism from journalists and the public alike. Stephanie Coombes, a journalist, was among the first to raise concerns in her newsletter, The Carp. The controversy highlights ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in media, particularly when it involves creating personas based on real individuals without clear disclosure to the audience.
ARN's decision to use an AI host without informing listeners has raised questions about the authenticity and trustworthiness of media content, especially in an era where AI-generated content is becoming increasingly prevalent.
