Environmental Groups Accuse Elon Musk's xAI of 'Gross ...
Elon Musk's xAI facility in Memphis, which houses the supercomputer named "Colossus," is currently under scrutiny for allegedly using illegal methane gas-burning turbines to power its operations. The facility, which supports xAI’s chatbot Grok, has been accused of operating 35 gas turbines without the necessary permits, far exceeding the 15 units it applied for in January 2025.
According to advocacy groups like the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) and Memphis Community Against Pollution, these turbines generate approximately 420 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to powering an entire city. The turbines are reportedly emitting harmful pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and formaldehyde, at levels that violate the Clean Air Act. The SELC estimates that the facility emits between 1,200 and 2,100 tons of NOx annually, making it the largest industrial source of smog-forming pollution in Memphis.
The facility is located in South Memphis, a historically Black community that already faces higher rates of cancer, asthma, and lower life expectancy due to industrial pollution. Advocacy groups have called for an emergency shutdown order and daily fines of $25,000 until xAI complies with environmental regulations. Despite these allegations, xAI has not yet been awarded any permits for the turbines, and representatives from the company have not responded to requests for comment.
This situation highlights the significant energy demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure and the environmental challenges associated with powering such facilities, particularly when fossil fuels are involved.
