Canalys Insights - Lunar Lake to add momentum to Intel's AI ...
Intel's AI PC chips, particularly the Core Ultra series, have been gaining momentum rather than declining. The company has set an ambitious goal to ship 100 million AI PCs by the end of 2025, and it is on track to meet this target. In Q2 2024, shipments of AI PCs with Intel Core Ultra more than doubled sequentially, with a significant ramp-up expected in the second half of the year. Since the launch of Meteor Lake in December 2023, Intel has shipped over 15 million Core Ultra chips to OEMs.
The introduction of the next-generation Lunar Lake processors at IFA 2024 further strengthens Intel's position in the AI PC market. Lunar Lake meets Microsoft’s requirements for Copilot+ PCs and will be featured in more than 80 new PC models from 20 OEM partners. This new chip series is positioned in the premium notebook category and competes directly with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series and AMD’s Ryzen AI, offering a significant increase in TOPS performance compared to Meteor Lake.
Intel’s engagement with Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) has also been robust, with over 150 ISVs developing more than 350 new AI features for Intel’s AI PC platforms. This ecosystem support is crucial for differentiating AI PCs and driving adoption.
While there are challenges in the consumer space, particularly in clarifying the tangible benefits of AI PCs, Intel’s progress in the commercial sector is promising. The upcoming commercial PC refresh cycle, driven by the end of Windows 10 support in October 2025, is expected to boost awareness and adoption of AI PCs in the enterprise market.
In summary, Intel’s AI PC chips are not experiencing a decline in demand. Instead, the company is making significant strides in expanding its AI PC segment, with strong shipment growth and the launch of advanced processors like Lunar Lake.
